Does Marshmallow Seed Need Stratification?
You will find conflicting advice online. RHS simply recommends propagation by seed, while some commercial seed suppliers state that no cold stratification is required and others report improved germination after a moist-cold period.
That tells us something useful: do not force every marshmallow seed lot through the same pretreatment. Seed age, source and storage matter.
How to Sow Marshmallow Seed
RHS also notes that marshmallow can be sown in midsummer. In colder areas, many gardeners start under cover or sow in a protected nursery bed so the perennial establishes before winter.
Where Marshmallow Grows Best
RHS describes Althaea officinalis as easy to grow across a wide range of conditions, with best growth in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. It also tolerates partial shade and wetter ground better than many Mediterranean herbs.
Cambridge University Botanic Garden notes that despite the common name, marshmallow can also grow in ordinary well-drained soil.
First-Year Growth
Expect a developing crown and root system rather than immediate maximum size. Marshmallow is a perennial, and the plant becomes more substantial over time.
Keep weeds away while the plant is young. Once the crown is established, the large leaves and upright growth make it much more competitive.
Watering, Cutting Back and Winter
Water during dry spells while plants establish. Mature marshmallow is more tolerant than its name suggests, but prolonged drought can reduce leaf size and vigor.
RHS recommends cutting the plant down to ground level after flowering is over. In cold climates the top growth dies back naturally and the crown returns the following spring.
