Refrigerator Method: Step by Step

Confirm the treatment. Check species, recommended temperature and number of weeks.
Moisten a clean medium. Fine vermiculite, sand, peat-free seed mix or a damp paper towel can work depending on the seed.
Mix or wrap the seed. The seed should contact moisture without sitting in free water.
Seal and label. Use a clean bag or container. Add species, start date and target finish date.

Count backward from your desired sowing date. If a perennial needs 60 days of cold treatment and you want to sow indoors in late February, stratification must begin around late December—not the week before sowing.

Preventing Mold and Rot

Start clean: clean hands, clean bag, fresh medium. Keep the substrate damp rather than wet. Check the bag every week or two. A small amount of harmless surface growth can sometimes occur, but foul odor, slimy seed or extensive fuzzy growth suggests excessive moisture or contamination.

If mold appears early, remove obviously decayed material, replace the medium if practical, and reduce moisture. Do not soak the batch in household chemicals without a species-specific protocol.

Fridge Stratification vs Winter Sowing

Refrigerator stratification gives you control over start date and moisture. Winter sowing lets outdoor seasonal temperatures provide the cold period naturally. Cornell Cooperative Extension describes winter sowing as a low-tech way to expose hardy seed to natural freeze-thaw and cold conditions while containers provide some protection.

Winter sowing is convenient when your climate supplies dependable cold. Refrigerator treatment is easier when winters are warm, timing must be precise, or you only have a small amount of expensive seed.

What to Do After Stratification

After the target cold period, sow the seed using its normal species instructions. Stratification does not override sowing depth or light requirement. A light-germinating species may still need to remain on the surface; another seed may need covering.

Some seeds begin germinating inside the refrigerator. If a root appears, handle it carefully and sow immediately. Use tweezers only if needed and avoid crushing the emerging root.
